Abstract: Personalization of User Interfaces (UI) has long been an approach to bridge the gap between an original UI design and the needs of an individual user. While previous studies have reported the benefits of personalized and adapted UIs, the means by which existing UIs can be adjusted to users’ preferences are under-explored. In this seminar, we will present our research investigating people’s perspectives on personalization, namely their current practices and challenges, triggers, and adoption aspirations. Results from two studies, consisting in a 3-week co-creation study (n=7), where participants personalized, and an online survey (n=145), revealed that most people are not familiar with personalization but are excited with the possibility of having more control over their UIs. We found that personalization solutions should adapt to people’s availability, skills, perception of UIs, need for control, and need for privacy.
